Enjoy the addiction

Hello, my name is Ebe, and I have been addicted to working out for over a year now...

That is how I envision the punch line to jokes other people like to make about those who are willing to bleed, or at least get a blister or two. I could care less about how the "non-fit" view my life and my training. They may express their opinion as often as they like, for I believe people should be free to speak. It is still my choice not to listen. That is the joy of being in control of your life and lifestyle. Fitness does not care what color you are, religion you believe in, or who you are sleeping with. Fitness, to me, is a healthy way to live my life. I do not ask others to partake in my addiction, but often times they do. It is amazing to me how one person can start looking better, feeling better, and being vocal about it, can change the lives of so many around them. I was helped out by a person like that, and I am eternally grateful for the push.

I ran my first long outside run of the year this week. 18 miles in sub 18 degree temps. I loved every second of it...Ok, that’s not quite true. My ipod gave up at mile nine, my ductape shoe covers fell off at mile 12, and my last power gel was more along the lines of a power popsicle. What I loved about it was that I did it. I fed my addiction to push myself to new limits. In 34+ years, I have never run 18 miles consecutively. Now I have.

Go out and feed your addiction for fitness. If you have never felt the joys of pushing yourself farther than you have ever been, give it a try!!!

I look forward to my marathon in April, after I finish a few more long runs.

Fitness Catylist

Fitness Catalyst...Find one.

I am not a trainer or coach, and I do not pretend to be one. I like to read books on the sports I choose to participate in. Life, in my eyes, is a sport. You can choose to compete, sit on the bench, quit, or do something in the middle of all that. I choose to push myself to compete. February is my anniversary month for fitness. I am reminded by a date that tells me about a year ago I was 205 lbs of fat potential energy. I found a fitness catalyst. He helped me be accountable to myself and my goals. Showed me that following a plan is the only way to go...especially when you are lost in the world of "heavy". I dropped 35 lbs, ran some races, and am now training for a marathon and a season of triathlons. I don not always enjoy what I hear from the guy who pushes those buttons, but I always listen. I got myself to this point with hard work and dedication. I did the work, I logged the miles, and he helped me to be accountable for each and every aspect of the journey. No health club personal trainer is going to do this for you. You need to find the person who can help you define or redefine what fitness and success are. That is a good place to start looking. 90X helped me get out of the gates. 13 weeks of hard work. I owned the DVD's for over a year before I completed the first workout. Having the tools and using them are two different things. I encourage everyone to find that person or program that will send you to the next level. Not just the next fitness level, but maybe the next level of living. Go after it while you can.

Drink The Koolaide

I have set out on this journey of fitness and competition to better myself both physically and mentally. I read and do as much research on the topic of distance running and endurance sports as possible. I have also enlisted some of the greatest local minds I can find to pick their brains for as much data as they will allow. To this end, I find it very disturbing the amount of garbage that gets published these days. I have gone to the bookshelf of a very accomplished endurance athlete and picked his brain until he was ready to flatten mine. I have read and digested as much of the books and articles and lectures he has given me. I have also listened to the countless stories I am able to eek out of the local greats when they will part with them. With all this data circling around in my brain, I go online to find some more info...and nothing. Not that I am opposed reading stories about the guy who signed up for a 1/2 IM and had never ran more than a 5k. I just do not think that is the kind of story you put out there for beginners to be looking at. I was searching for mistakes that most FNG's make, not read an entire article about what common sense alone could have prevented. There is a lot of knowledge out there, just make sure you trust the source before you put a whole lot of stock in it.
Here is my new years advice...
If you are looking to get fit in this new year, take my advice...Start at home!!! The guys at Gym Jones have a saying about "no amount of work in the gym makes up for a shitty diet"...that says it all. If you want to eat like crap...I guess your gonna look like crap. Before you go and give your hard earned dollars to the junk clubs...I mean fitness clubs, look at what you could buy for your own gym with 1 years dues. At $50 a month, you have a $600 budget. You may not be able to get all the cool stuff that a boutique place has, but you do not need it. Start with a good pull up bar, then look for a good bench, and finally a nice set of dumbbells. Craigslist and other sights have a ton of this stuff, and it is usually 50% of what a store would charge you. If you have anything left in your budget, save it to buy a treadmill and or exercise bike next year. Take your weights and move them. I Have learned over the years that all the cardio in the world will not make you loose all the weight you are looking to get rid of. You must lift weights. I am not saying you need to become a power lifter, but cardio alone is not going to do it. Find a local trainer, someone who is not completely in bed with the gyms, and get a program that you can follow. If you need someone, go look at "The Pitbull's" blog, he can get you started. Get out there and get rid of your fat suit. You may end up putting more money into your gym this year because you like shopping for new clothes. Just a nice side effect to a fitness lifestyle.

Welcome

Welcome to the East Bertram Endurance Society Blog. I will do my best to post meaningful babble about my attempts to become an age group triathlete. I train a lot, work a lot, and try to fill the rest of my time with family and sleep. Thanks for taking a look.
